Category: Box Office Recordsadmin @ 11:04 am

Quantum of Solace” is bagging the top spot in box offices worldwide. It seems that people are really liking Daniel Craig and the new grittier Bond!

The film first broke box office opening day records at the UK making £4.9 million alone that day and bagging a total of £15.5 for the whole debut weekend early this month. Sweden and France also added to the sweet take with a total debut weekend sales of £14.2 million.

In the US alone it raked in $70.4 million during its opening weekend, a record for Bond movies wherein the previous record was held by “Die Another Day” for an opening weekend of $47.7 million.

In Ireland, the film is leaving all the other movies that are showing in the dust even on its 3rd week with a whopping€431,000 on the 3rd weekend and and a total 3-week run of €3,623,000. It looks like its also set to beat 007 records in this country, which is set by “Casino Royale” for bagging a total of €4m.

Australian Box Office Enjoying a Very Profitable Year

Category: Box Office Revenue,Worldwide Box Officeadmin @ 10:59 am

As the US box office continues to struggle this year, the Australian cinema box office looks like its going to enjoy another year of good revenue. In fact, with the way several key films have done and are currently raking in ticket sales it is likely that this year’s profit will be a record breaker, exceeding the $907.2 million mark set in 2004. Compared with last year’s earnings, this year’s box office takings are so far 2% higher than that of 2007.

Currently 20 films have already passed the $10 million mark within the year, which in Australia is equivalent to the US$100 million mark in Hollywood. This indicates that this year will indeed a year of blockbusters since the average number of films to hit the mark each year is 22. With several months more to go and a lineup that is sure to keep the Australian box office fat, it won’t be surprising to see more than 22 films hit the mark this year.

The Dark Knight: Breaking Box Office Records Left and Right

Category: Box Office Recordsadmin @ 10:55 am

For the second time in just 10 days “The Dark Knight” has rewritten box-office record books after crushing “Spider Man 3′s” box-office opening record of $151.1 million by more than $7 million last week, and now being the fastest film ever to clear the $300 million mark. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” previously held the record after reaching the mark in 16 days but “The Dark Knight” did so in just 10 days after grossing $75.6 million on its second weekend.

With all the records its setting perhaps “The Dark Knight” will even come close to “Titanic’s” all time box office total revenue high of $600.8 million. With the way its going its even almost surely going to top “Star War’s” total revenue of $461 million.

So far with repeat customers being the trend it seems that “The Dark Knight” will be holding the number one spot at the box office for a few more weeks.

“The Forbidden Kingdom” Boosts Weekend Box Office Revenues

Category: Weekend Box Officeadmin @ 10:52 am

“The Forbidden Kingdom” sure has runaway with the box office during their opening weekend with an estimated sales of nearly $21 million.

That “The Forbidden Kingdom” came out on top did not come as a surprise to anyone with the anticipation created by the mere fact that two martial arts legends, Jackie Chan and Jet Li, star in the movie.

Just a few days ago Steve Rothenberg, president of distribution at Lionsgate, was quoted to have said that they “will be very happy with a gross of $15 million or beyond, but tracking certainly indicates that we have a shot at doing in the high teens or better.” So I guess this makes them extra happy.

Coming in second at the weekend box office was another debut film “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, which earned an estimated $17.3 million over the weekend.

The good ticket sales this weekend is drawing cheers in Hollywood, which has been waiting with baited breath due to the relatively low weekend box office showings so far this year.

“Vantage Point” Looks Down from the Top

Category: Weekend Box Officeadmin @ 10:49 am

“Vantage Point” topped the weekend box office with an estimated $24 million in ticket sales. It bumped “Jumper” from the number one spot, after earning only $12.7 million on its second week for a total 2-week run of $56.2 million so far (not bad!). A close third was the “Spiderwick Chronicles”, which earned $12.6 million.

I am quite sure that with sales as good as it is the “Vantage Point” producers are quite happy and have pounding hearts hoping for an equally good 2nd week. The movie, which is an action-drama about a presidential assassination, does deserve to be on the top of the box office for a few more weeks though. The (thankfully not literally, but almost literally) heart-stopping action keeps on replaying the same scene from a different person’s point of view, hence vantage point, revealing a new aspect of the plot in each repeated scene.

2007 Box Office Revenue Up, Ticket Sales Stagnant

Category: Box Office Revenueadmin @ 10:41 am

According to LA Times, the box office revenue in North America has gone up even if the actual number of tickets sold remained stagnant.

In 2007, revenue went up by 4% to $9.7 billion but the number of tickets sold stayed at 1.4 billion tickets – the same as 2006 figures. Despite the lack in growth it is still a lot better than the low sales in 2005.

Studios were hoping for a better turn out last year considering the nice sales figure at the start of the year due to films like “300″ and “Wild Hogs”. The summer films also made a good showing but ticket sales began to taper of in the fall. Thankfully, films released in December also made a good showing with some, like “I Am Legend” continuing to dominate the box office even until this month.
